i think it's better to have a blog post to answer your question, Guest1.
from what i know, fashion designing is purely on designing outfits and what your customer wants. fashion merchandising includes fashion designing but more on the market side, i heard they do things like sourcing for supplier, merchandising is more more retail/market side i guess ? fashion designing course doesn't include the market side, it's more of designing an garment that satisfy our customer and yes you do get to sew your garment. i'm not too sure about the merchandising side. will ask around and let you. (: do leave your email or something so that i can send you a more detailed comparison.
for my course, fashion designing. 1st semester we did Research Methodology, where you have to do a customer profile, do a board of pictures of things they like, and a summary of what type of clothes they go for, what colours they favor and things like that. we also get to pick a theme to our liking and do a research on it which will lead to what kind of designs we will be drawing.
Fashion Design Basic is a definite, you learn about the different silhouette, how to draw certain garments and mostly you do designing, they will be other things like creating a mood board, a theme board. yeah whatever designing we do, there will always be a need to have a theme of it, it can be any kind of theme, example ancient rome.
Sewing class. Boring classes like History of Fashion.Textile class where you learn how fabrics come about, how to test for fabric and so on. Pattern Making, is where you draft out your garment on the piece of paper which you need to help you cut out your fabric and sew your garment out, IT'S A BORE. and lastly fashion illustration, you learn to draw fashion models and clothed them. (:

sem 2, which is what i'm doing now.
Sewing class, Fashion Design basic. Communication Skills (yah wth module). Draping class. Textile, Fashion Illustration, Computer technique - using photoshop and illustrator to design your outfit. History of fashion (AGAIN!?!). fashion forecast, predicting the future fashion base on your research. and lastly pattern making.

yeah, i'm in NAFA now, this school looks old and boring and it's really really SMALL. inside no air con! only the classroom have air con!!!! fashion is at campus 2 btw. if you're considering to go into fashion school, i suggest you have to be very consistent in your work if not you'll have to do alot of work. yeah, and if you're considering whether to go into NAFA or Laselle, i heard Laselle foundation year is 3x harder than NAFA. yeah, you got to have alot of creativity. (: wish you all the best! hehe, when you do fashion, at times you just feel like giving up, DON'T MAN! since you set your mind to it! JUST DO IT MAN! :D because 1st passed and 2nd sem is about to end, almost half of my classmates dropped out. yeah, if you're lazy like me, you'll have a hard time trying yo finish up your work. HEHE.
